This years IT class was full of disgust, despair, and dismay. At least, it was better than last year, since the ones who did not want IT, Mr. S, or both moved to Art class. However, it was still disturbing. So, if your are looking for somebody's exciting learning experiences in school, I strongly recommend you to look elsewhere.

The Concept of Sharing

One of the most disgusting thing about IT is the concept of sharing. In my dictionary, there is hardly a word "to share". I either gain or lose. When you share, the ownership of the object blurs, and the potential is that the original owner loses the ownership as time passes. That is something I curse at. Now, the problem is that with an object, you can definitely tell if it is his or hers, but with an information, there is no way to tell. The result is that when you let an information out, the one who has the most authority, regardless of the connection to the source of the information, takes the ownership.

Another concern is security issue. The more people know about you, the more vulnerable you become. For example, what I am forced to do now is to tell the public what I am doing in school. It provides a great opportunity for assault, kidnapping, assassination, etc. More specifically, this page might become my last words, and this whole thing is suicide. If your object is somehow to assassinate me, please look all you wish. I will list some more of my webpages as you read on.

Our first move towards doom began as Mr. S announced his risky plan of E-Portfolio (http://sites.google.com/a/iis.or.kr/andrewkimiisportfolio/). You might still be able to see it in Google Sites. You should hurry, though, since I swear that I will destroy it as soon as I can. It took a long time to build a portfolio containing all the work I did, but I put the security before almost anything. Whatever comes, I solemnly think that it will be just as boring to read it as it was to write it.

Our next move was in creating a Wordpress blog (http://andrewxyz.wordpress.com/). Since Wordpress became the main means of our recording and communicating, this would be the first place you would like to check if you are planning for an assassination. The blog is stuffed with IT logs, newpaper articles, and other assignments. Look through them carefully; you might find something useful, but do not blame it on me even if you find nothing.

The Concept of Broadcasting

As I have explained before. This is dismaying that I have to do this constantly. It always about exposing yourself to the angry mobs out there in the world. I will not bother to say this all over again.

You probably see that broadcasting is definitely worse than simply sharing. If blogging is a suicide, podcasting is a suicide bombing. Hopefully, you will see what I mean by that. If you want to be absolutely clear, please help yourself and listen to my podcasts (http://propagandacenter.mypodcast.com/). Now, have you heard it, you will also see that my voice is not really a suitable voice for... something I feel no need to mention again. The likeliness is that the things will become worse when we start vodcasting.

The Concept of RSS

RSS or Real Simple Syndication was probably one of the most acceptable things I have done this year. It was not sharing anymore but gaining. However, I find RSS rather ironic. While so many hackers hate centralization, how has it become of them that they started to gather the information up in one huge aggregator? If what they meant in the hacker's code of ethics was true, why are they moving towards centralization, while they should be working for decentralization? This is rather a difficult question to answer. I hope someone I know has the answer for it.

Intl. Society for Technology Education NETS Standards

Below are the recently updated standards set by the International society for technology Edcuation www.iste.org for being technologically literate -are you able to do these things?

NETS' IT FOUNDATION STANDARDS FOR ALL STUDENTS
The information technology foundation standards for students are divided into six broad categories. Standards within each category are to be introduced, reinforced, and mastered by students. Class Guidelines
IT / Comp Technology Course Middle & High School Guidelines/Expectations Instructor: Mr. Sean | stm@iis.or.kr
Welcome to IT/Computer Studies class. Below are some guidelines for participating in this class and receiving the best grade possible.

MATERIAL NEEDS: For this class you will need to have:

A signed IIS Technology Acceptable Use Policy
A school computer account username and password
A school Edline account username and password
A working email address.
--If you do not have any of these please tell me and we'll set them up for you.
You will also need to have a portable (USB) storage device -1 gigabyte capacity is preferable.

Recommended: 1) An assignment book or similar means of keeping track of assignments –many people use an online based method. (Note assignments are your responsibility to keep track of please do not come to me after due dates asking “What do I owe?”) 2) A positive, inquisitive, working mental attitude!

PARTICIPATION & PERFORMANCE: As a student and member of this learning community you are expected to:

Be respectful of the instructor (me!), each other, yourselves and the process.
Work within the regulations established and agreed to by you in the school Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) for working with technology resources at IIS. For example do not play games in the lab unless given express permission.
Attend all lab sessions (classes) unless excused for a legitimate reason by the instructor (me) or the school.
arrive on time
Avoid bringing consumables: drinks, food and candy or gum into the computer lab.
Refrain from using cell phones, or MP3 and related electronic accessories while in class.
make an effort to take of personal needs (going to the lavatory, quenching your thirst etc) before class begins.
Complete all lab session and homework assignments within the given time line. Inability to do this will result in loss of credit for the assignment. Late assignments will not be awarded credit without a legitimate reason communicated to me BEFORE the grading period closes.
Communicate your questions and needs in or about class in a clear and reasonable manner --either verbally or in writing. Please remember as I've explained to you in class -I am here to help you learn how to learn and support you in the process but I am not a mind reader! :-)

GRADING STRUCTURE AND CREDIT: Students can earn a total of 250 points per quarter, 500 points per semester (1000 points. per school year)
Each quarter you are assessed and graded as follows:

In lab assignments (minor projects) and performance -10 pts a week --possible 100 points
homework assignments 5 pointts. per week -50 possible points.
Project work (one major project per quarter or semester completed during and outside of lab sessions )-100 possible total points

Total possible points per quarter: 250

I will be happy to discuss grades one to one with you by appointment (only). Please do not request personal conferences about such matters during class time. Remember, YOU earn your grades --I don't “give them” to you. (I'm just the score keeper!) I have confidence you all can do very well in this class if you make the right effort!

As explained in class to achieve grade 7 skill proficient in applications we need to be familiar with and able to use word processing tools.We can do this by either taking traditional tests or by applying the skills to create a project. This time around we'll be creating illustrated story projects to demonstrate our abilities.
So to create the Holiday Stories we'll use MS Word, OpenOffice Writer. To do the illustrations we;ll use Paint, and OO Draw. The stores will feature the holiday themes of Thanksgiving, Chanukah, Christmas, or New Years. They should be a minimum of 3 pages long with no maximum length. There must be with an illustration on each page. It must contain a well formatted title page and show the following formatting features:

different font sizes
different font styles
different font colors
spell checking, grammer and thesaurus tools
borders and shading
page numbering
balanced margins, headers and footer
word art and other graphic/photo insertion
basic drawings --created by program.

Share & Share Alike! As you know we have been working with Wikis. These again are Web 2.0 technolgies which are very much about sharing. This week we'll visit each others wiki sites and leave at last one comment or suggestion. Then, in keeping with this theme we'll also look at some useful sites and programs that are availiable in the "public domain" --so they are free for public use. We'll download some of these programs to help with our prductvity in class and elsewhere.

If you've not done it already --download Google Earth here in class. Explore some of the tools as shown in class.... Now find Indianhead School then see if you can find your home! Take a screenshot of both and post to your wikiphoto gallery page.
This quarter we will begin with a collaboarative unit --IT and Social Studies. You will do joint projects with myself and Mr. Lehman. Good news --you will recieve credit in both classes for the work you do. But first we will familiarize ourselves with some tools for going geography --such as Google Earth.

I'm sorry to say this, but this is the worst activity I've ever had. I just repeated what I already learned. I believe it's a waste of time to do repeating. I think it would be a lot better to learn how to use Microsoft Office than doing this kind of activities. I want to tell Mr, Sean that everyone didn't like this activity.

Tuesday & Thursday THIS IS THE LAST GRADING WEEK IN SEM II -Next week is an Exam week...

As alsway be aure to sign your name to the post to recieve credit! 4) Get ready for the final TEST. Thias will take place next week. In the test you'll be required to demonstrate your knowledge of the schools technology facilities; the network, the school AUP, Edline, as well as wiki's and MS Word. You will have over one hour to complete this test and a study guidle will bve posted for you beofre the end of the week...

3) Finish creating online schedules using Google docs.
4) Take the "calender" and "startpage" multimedia tutorials in the "help section" in thier gmail accounts. After this can customize your startpage.
